How real, Morten. I may have something that will work for you. Uses rigid bodies but it automatically sets a switch animation from passive to active dependent upon distance from a centre. Then use gravity or object to kick the segments off.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I need to make 100+ pieces of irregular broken curved glass pieces for highres still work, so I would appreciate some level of automatization - I guess we might be better off doing this with Blastcode in Maya :(
