Jeeze, you guys are going to scare off poor Marco!
;-)
Basically we support multiple interaction models because it makes
newcomers more comfortable with XSI and overall it has been a positive move for
XSI. We would love to be able to dictate a single interaction model for all
users but that is an unrealistic expectation.
In the areas of camera manipulation and tools adding these additional
interaction models has resulted in increased features for all users as it forced
us to re-examined things like pivots and streamline the workflow. So, even if
you are an XSI keymap user, you have gained new functionality thorough our
investment in other interaction models. From our perspective supporting
different interaction models is not time consuming because they mainly use
keymapping (which we always had in XSI) along with some custom preference
settings.
As far as functionality I can assure you that the QWERTY keymap is just
as good for working as the XSI one. (if you happen to prefer that way of
working) In particular, the Alt modifier functionality has largely been moved to
the D key inside the few tools that use Alt. Ctrl+Alt has been used for
right-button menus, F8 to toggle between object and component selection and
F9-F12 are used for component selection modes. Also, the view hotkeys are
largely the same but again require a Ctrl modifier. (i.e. Ctrl+0 for animation
editor) The ability to select objects within the transform tools is a nice
bonus as well as the ability to use Y to go back to your last non-QWERT
tool.
Vive la difference!

so what? ;-)
