THANKS guys!
I hadnt thought about lots of these things... I knew it had been discussed before, and I wondered if there was any outcome!
Thanks Ludo and Bernard...

Subject: Re: "super delete"
My experience with deletion is that there seem to be 3 major factors
that affect it:
1- visibility. The more visibility overrides there are (through node,
groups, layers and partitions), the longer it takes to delete. A scene
that does not override object visibility in any way will allow faster
deletion.
2- sheer number of objects in the scene. Deleting the same amount of
objects, with the same visibility settings, takes longer in a scene
with higher number of objects.
3- action sources. I found that when I had two scenes that were almost
identical. However, in the first one it would take 3 minutes to
branch-delete a character, while in the other one it would take 6
minutes. I found out that the more action sources you have, the longer
it takes. The scenes that took 6 minutes had a lot more action
sources. This brought me to write a script that when the animator was
"releasing" his scenes (meaning, it was flagged as completed until
corrections or approval), it would find all unused action sources and
delete them. Things became somewhat faster afterward.
There is another factor that can make a difference: how is the
Explorer's sorting parameter set to. Set to no sorting deletes the
fastest, alphabetical comes next, then alphabetical + order of
creation. If the explorer is not visible it can even be faster,
although do not expect huge improvements. Sometimes I would maximize a
render tree before deleting something. It helped only by a tiny bit. I
suspect the viewport redraw or other interface refresh considerations
play a role into deletion performance.
Cheers
Bernard
