to follow up...
I think I've managed to fix it, at least for now.. I uninstalled an addon, that has nothing in it that deals with envelopes specifically, and that seems to have settled things down.. I'm going to keep track of it though, because I can't quite figure out why the addon would have that effect..
I mean you know you have something weird happening when you take the red Jaiqua character and drag the drunk walk / hard run / walk action onto her, and on playing the animation she promptly morphs into a tangle of geo, which gets progressively worse as you scrub.
I'll dig into the addon and see what could possibly be the problem.. There are a lot of plugins and shaders in the addon, maybe that is where I've gone wrong.. Maybe I should compartmentalize the plugins and shaders into multiple addons instead..
