i find the lens blur filter in afterfx combined with a depth map (not zpic) gives pretty good results most of the time
nice and crisp, with bokeh effects to boot....

Cheers,

Thanks for the BA and Aftereffects ideas, I've downloaded BA shaders and played about with it quickly last night (late). Ideally I'm looking for a quite a clean, smooth and fast effect, it seems that the BA shader still requires high rendering times to get that clean crip DoF effect I was after, that may just be the perils of DoF rendering though...so I should get used to it. I really love that bokeh effect that X-DoF promises, I'd have no idea how to create that in XSI with either of the Lens shaders. As Leoung mentioned, X-DoF 3 by Evasion isn't avaialble for XSI 6+, so thats a little disappointing....

I know it's not free, but some aftereffects plugin like Lenscare I
find much better, since you can control it in post.

Also, instead of using the depth pass preset, just enable the Depth
framebuffer. It seems to look better.

try the BA_DOF shader frome here:

It has a nice feature that lets you focus on an object
by picking the object name.

Hello,

After rattling around XSI Depth of Field shaders, which to be fair, are
pretty bad, I was looking at other alternatives for the students here to
use on their projects. I'll be introducing how to use zpics and the DoF
node in the XSI Compositor tomorrow, but I was wondering if any of you have
come across other alternatives? Has anyone used X-Dof 3.0 with XSI 6.5? it
looks great, hopefully I may be able to acquire a few licenses (if they do
educational Pricing), but I have no prior experience of using it.

Cheers

Saf
