once you have done all the hair sytling and shading, you cache it and there is no conversion and then it is faster than mental ray.

Hi Joe and Guillaume,

I've not had a chance to go too in-depth. Main drawbacks from MR is it
does need to spend a bit
of preprocessing time to get shaders ready, though this generally
isn't too bad. If you have a huuuge
amount of hair you might not have fun with XSI pushing it all out
through the conversion, though this
issue is on XSI's end - so every 3rd party renderer will hit the same
issue with the API as it stands.

AO isn't as fast as ideal yet, but that will change in future version
when they expose their PTC AO.
(i.e. ambient occlusion without raytracing). You can also look
forward to very fast glossy reflections
etc when these features are exposed. To speed AO up for now be sure
to remove it from the shadow
slot. It's performance also compares favorably against MR on complex scenes.

Cheers,

Alan
