I'm all for the new renderers and 3Delight, etc.

But none of this changes the fact that the NAN pixels need to get fixed. As
long as MR is shipping with XSI, it's a big part of what people are paying
for and needs to function properly. Seriously, it can't be that hard to fix
this. I echo what Kris said in his last post.

If bugs like this can't get fixed, maybe there should start being options to
buy XSI seats without MR.

Funny. I was thinking just this right after I saw the pricetag for 3Delight...

It's like buy hardware without an OS... But, just like the hardware vendors have deals with Microsoft... Soft has a deal with Mental Images.

Perhaps they should reconsider that deal then.

Soft (next to Houdini) used to exclusively offer mental ray to the film/post industry - and as such helped put mental images on the map, while benefiting from its appeal. In the mean time mental images decided they want to rule the world, and pretty much has a deal with everyone and his mother - with better deals for new collaborators if you judge the pricing schemes.
So soft's got a very bad business model - and is way behind the competition, at least what rendering concerns.

Anyway you turn it, the coming of alternatives for mental ray in XSI is a blessing.
However, I doubt mental images is going to do anything to keep its current position on XSI.
I doubt they'll feel anything financially from losing some XSI customers.
Mental images is not as innovative as it used to be, and -like soft- has a lot of old weak points that arent being adressed, while focusing more on the business side and Autodesk.

Well, at least there is a real choice now for XSI users.
And yeah - XSI seats without mental ray - there's an idea...

But I agree something needs to be done. And hitting Mental Images in the pocketbook for not making realiable software is indeed the best approach. But I doubt it is going to happen any time soon.
