ya, the relax by faces feature in max works pretty
well.

I like the tools... I mean, the manipulation tools,
subprojections, display, tearing mode... But I feel the same about the the
speed and the fact that we are NOT up to date with unfolding/relaxing
algorithms. Also not be able to work with multiple objects really suck...
and I expect they fix this.
Just to add that the Relax doesn't really
do what the name is saying... haha This relax algorithm in XSI is doing
some sort of comparison between the 3dmesh and the UV, so it tries to force
the distance between the UV points to be the same distance your 3d vertex
are... Don't know if it use edges or what but this is what it do. This
works like that because it doesn't really help anyone justs relax UVs as the
relax operation do in polys... your UVs would end up all distorted.
So
even if they put a new unfold or whatever... this kind of "relax" would still
need to exist. Good if they improve it though... this "relax comparing
distances" in 3dsmax works way better.

I
have a modeler friend who is making a many-piece armoured
hardbody character and he is very much annoyed by the fact you can't
select multiple objects and then move around multiple UV shells
from different objects at once. (In Maya it's possible.) Would be nice
to see that fixed in a future version.. (He
resorted to using "Merge" for portions of the armour and later using that
JP_Separate script to reseparate them once the UVs are arranged
nicely.)
And I'd really like to see an implementation similar to
Maya's "Unfold" feature (it's kinda like Roadkill, but built-in) and
I'd *LOVE* a "Relax UVs" that doesn't suck.
That said, I still
generally like XSI's Texture Editor better than Maya's
though.
Just my $0.02,
