As this OT'ish subject is becoming even more OT'ish I might just throw
another question what is almost totally OT'ish. What software are you
using to display any picture format what floats out there?
I wish there would be professional linux user forum about DCC.
Cheers,

Fess up, this wasn't a mistake, Alan asked you to set this up so he
could pimp his new uberpackaged sabyon!
Cheeky buggers.
As for my fedora experience, I'm giving fc8 a good go, and insofar I'm
liking it.
It's still an rpm based distro with all coming with it, but yum is now
fully functional, package management is alright, it's a fairly mistake
tolerant distro if you need to play around a bit, and it's modern
enough that it will install right away on the latest and greatest
blazing hp laptop or dell workstation and pick up everything except the
fingerprint recognition device (which is not a big deal since I don't
use it, least somebody is tempted into chopping off one of my fingers).
It's also noobish enough that you will find decent support around for
it. I still have to find an os related issue or question not addressed
in a site somewhere.
I would probably not use it for serving anything or for security
sensitive tasks since it's an experimental distro, and the popularity
of it makes it also one of the most exploited and documented, also it's
not meant to do that particularly well anyway, but for a desktop and
DCC platform it's not bad. Beats debian based crap for sure (and here
is where the old school purists that used debian before gentoo was l337
start sending me hate mail).

hey
alan
i forwarded your stuff to our HR guy here at blur. we are actively
developing asset managment software using QT, cpp, pyqt, postgresql,
with xsi and 3ds max. i think you could be a great asset here also
because we are rendering more projects now with all mental ray. we will
see where that goes, i do hope you find something locally because
moving is always a bitch
anyways i had a question about linux distros, i wanted your opinion
because i think this question would probably fall mostly under
preference/opinion of a distribution of linux...
lets exclude xsi from the scenario, just linux for what it is an OS,
and lets assume that one day xsi can be used on many other
distributions.
for you why gentoo?
your opinion of fedora? 8? 9?
your opinion of unbuntu?
looking forward to your response...
