I've been using rendermap very extensively the past year, not to my delight I must say.
It does work - but it sure is a minefield - and you need to beat it into submission.
I've seen plenty of weirdness, but not the pink one specifically.

are you trying to render the result as it is in the render (beauty) or a specific pass?
do you render from one object to another (eg highpoly to lowpoly) or to the object itself?
keep in mind that rendermap uses secondary rays (I think exclusively) - so keep that in mind for visibility settings.
also keep in mind it uses the pass'es render settings, not region settings!!
did you use any "special" shaders - either addons or some of the advanced mental ray shaders?
any lightmaps? otherwise, anything particular for lighting, FG perhaps?
...

about your rant...
when did you ever feel rendermap was reliable?
its allways been very unstable, unpredictable, slow,...

<rant>

maybe I have been doing something wrong, but for the last year whenever I try to make a rendermap, XSI either ignores me and just doesnt do it or provides me with a pink map.. I reckon this has happened about 75% of the times I have tried to create a rendermap...

the most annoying thing is that I tend to use rendermaps to bail myself out of tight corners when people are waiting for passes.

this used to be a really reliable tool.. now i am not so sure :( anyone else have this problem?

oh and yes i know some might say a "pink rendermap" is very fitting for me... (hides)
