Haven't read all the posts so sorry if this has been covered already, but have you tried deleting your c:\Users directory for XSI (after making a safety copy).
I had a very sluggish File Browser a while ago and this seemed to solve it. I copied the useful data back from the backup directory after XSI had built a new one.
