It kind of stemmed from working across SGI unix machines back in the day.
When you're working on single platform networks it's obvious that you'd want
the network file system to look the same from everywhere on the network but
it takes a bit for the penny to drop across platforms that use different
path structures. It's also one of the reasons I don't like using mapped
drives.

Networking is one if the things MS has never really understood and arrived
late to. What they're finally doing now was done much better and much easier
10 years ago.
