Once the cloud is getting simmed by a particleOp you can't really change the pType. A trick might be to make a second particle cloud that is not simmed but rather controlled by a scripted op. You could copy all the necessary data from the simmed cloud to the non-simmed cloud using the scripted Op and still retain the ability to change ptypes. Not quick or easy :P

I've tried it both from a particle event, where it does absolutely nothing, and a scripted operator which gives me a huge schizophrenic mess of unusable rubbish.....
