That would be fine if I didn't need some light and shadowed areas. I was able to color correct the alpha, but that's not ideal.

I've had this problem as well...
I usually just disregard the alpha and use the luminance as the alpha or
set the mode to "add" instead of over inside the shader. Setting the
mode tends to blow it out though.
