Last year's Production Challenge was really good. The only wish list item I would add to the current list is some kind of live streaming of the event. Also, I thought it was really cool that Alex Lindsay was there as the MC, but I thought it would have been nice to hear a little more play-by-play to keep things lively.

Hey Brad,

The only thing I kind of wish we saw last year was some of the compositing from Todd. I know you guys ran out of time and he had to do it over night / the next day but some of the rendering setup and comping would be nice to experience, especially when it is Todd that is doing it.

Any word if the same people from last year will be participating? Todd, Greg, Dave?

Thanks,

Thanks Jen!

This thread isn't an official announcement of the event just yet. It's purpose is to get a community discussion started in order to help shape the actual event.

So discuss, community, discuss!

   Hi –

The event is taking place in Los Angeles, at SIGGRAPH. Softimage
is planning on hosting the event at the Downtown Los Angeles
Sheraton on Sunday, August 10^th , from 11am-11pm. We'll have

food, etc, to keep everyone going, and of course systems etc for
the artists to work on. This event is open to all SIGGRAPH
attendees as well as local LA artists and students.

We will also be doing as much as possible to capture the
information and bring it to the web.

BUT – we cannot sponsor travel for those who want to participate.
I would if I could, but we have to keep this limited to people who
   are planning on attending SIGGRAPH.

If anyone is interested, please work with Brad.

   Thanks!

   Greetings Fellow XSIers!

It's getting closer to SIGGRAPH, and it's time to start thinking
about what we're going to do for this year's Softimage Production
Challenge. Here's a quick review of last year's event:

   time lapse: http://youtube.com/watch?v=WsRop2LFWSw
   finished piece: http://youtube.com/watch?v=aBVBKI9pIcM

The basic gist of the event is, we get a few experienced XSI
production artists... people who are experienced both in
production and in doing presentations, and over the course of one
work day, create a production shot from scratch, from start to
finish. Along the way, we demonstrate real-world production
techniques, live problem solving, and non-linear workflow. This is
   jazz for the CG artist.

This year, we hope to have more participants, bigger sponsorship,
and to get more done in less time. So before the event is
officially marked on the calendar, I am asking for community
input. What do you want to see in such an event? What was missing
from last year? What would get you excited for such an event this
   year?

I'm going to start off with some of the ideas already in discussion:

       * Better event documentation: Record everything that happens
and edit it down into training DVD
       * Audience participation (on-site recruitment): Have open
seats on workstations connected to our network, and recruit
volunteers to help out with asset creation
       * Community shot submissions: Hold a contest to get the best
         shot design from community members.
       * More view screens for displaying/switching on what the
         presenters are doing.

Lastly, this year, there will be ICE! So whatever we do must
include some nifty effects to demo the new technology.

I look forward to your replies.

   -Brad

PS - Feel free to reply on the lists. Any public attention we
gather will only help out with securing more sponsorships. :-)
