xsi to nuke

Subject : xsi to nuke
Im trying to communicate with nuke from xsi using python.
i can do everything i need in the individual packages but i cant seem to find a simple way to communicate between them.

i seem to recall someone saying they could import nuke and access all its functions directly?
but i cant figure out the syntax?

failing that, will it require an rpc type solution?
