For the people not familiar with the Real Smart Motion Blur
(RSMB) product: When you use the motion vector to blur the image, you
indeed do not get any blur in reflections and transparency, because Mental Ray
doesn’t generate any information for that. That’s a problem
for all 2D blur post-process. However, RSMB can also do Optical Flow analysis which
takes into account all the pixels of the image. That works probably
better in some situation like retiming (Twixtor) than others. You should mail
Pierre Jasmin at RevisionFX if you have issue with the product. It’s
still just 2D motion blur, though.
A few years ago, I had evaluated at other motion blur solutions
for XSI, including one based on Optical Flow from Avid research. RSMB was
far superior in quality and speed, so I’ve pushed to make sure that we got
this plug-in for the Fx Tree.
Please try to keep the criticism positive as RevisionFx has made
effort to support the tiny XSI community. People can download a demo of the fxtree
plug-in from http://www.revisionfx.com/products/rsmb/downloads/#Softimage|XSI%20(Avid)

OTish: What nodes does the FXTree need?
As far as I know ( so not very far ;-) ), the only problems
with real smart motion blur are specifics to 2d motion blur limitations.
It doesn't works for transparency, reflexions, and all situations with
different velocities in the same pixel (wheels, wings etc...) as all those data
can't be saved in a 2d motion vector map.
For all the other case, it works very well for me.
