For the second question. Are you sure they didn't hide the original Label (the one on the left) and fake it using a AddStaticText() ?
Check SetAttribute (PPGItem) for advanced Layout in the SDK.

I'm working with a multi-line string in a custom property page. The string I am feeding into the string object has "\n"  for line returns but when I run the script it puts in that square for a non recognized character. How do I force a line return in the scrolling string box?

The other problem is that the dialog is always drawn with the label to the left of the string box. I've seen some scripts with the label on top for this type of control but I can't find a way to set it on the top.
