Without knowing more of your particular need, I hope I'm not wasting your
time. What about doing 2 passes one for each color on the whole of the
objects? Then do a depth pass and use the depth pass to use as a gradient
wipe. Just a thought, may or may not be viable for your situation.

  Thought about that one but logistically can't do it...  there are 
about 40 discrete animations that have to happen and each one would span 
three passes, making about 120 passes.
