The way I did this was to place a rig on the camera, a bone with a rectangle
parented who's size and proportions were tied into camera fov and distance
of rectangle from camera. That way you can take the xy cords of the tracker
directly onto nulls parented to the rectangle. You have the added advantage
that you get free depth on the nulls.
