i take it all back, my workaround was rubbish!
All i'm trying to do is a table cloth.... Falls off table - gets picked up and put back on. I cannot get pins or nails to do what i want. the pinned/nailed cluster always shoots back to the position it was in at the start of the sim. So i have to whack the pins in at the start, mute them - AND - get them to track to where they should be when i want to switch them on, decimating the speed of the workflow completely.
And so now i have to go cap in hand to the grumpy maya lot on the other side of the room and ask them to do it.
lovely.

i've got a bug tips for animating pin constraints on and off. I animate the mute on and off and press play and the constraint seem to not want to behave and to get round it i have to toggle the mute to the other state but not save a key, and then press play.
wierd one that took me 2 days to work out.
