>Yes it's all about the shaders. It took me about 3 months intensive study to learn how to write my own shaders, but once that's been achieved it's easy to understand why Pixar's (and all the others who use renderman) movies look so amazing. In truth it's not really that hard to learn if you have a good grasp of math, a bit of programming and a lot of patience...

This is something that I don't get though. You say it's way faster (and it is for certain things), but then you talk about programming and needing a lot of patience when it comes to shader creation. So imo, you have to factor in the amount of time you save by quickly setting up MR shaders... which might cancel out the faster render time.

For me personally, the licensing sceme turned me right off. I would have to buy 2 seats just for my main workstation alone. Kinda bogus if you ask me.

yes... and some 'simple' things like environment based reflection maps can be tricky to get going - for one thing 3Delight uses a different type of environment map that any other renderer I've used. had me baffled for ages.

In the renderman world there is a severe lack of easy to reach resources. feels a bit like a special club sometimes. I think because people end up putting so much of their own effort into developing even the basics (there's very little ready to go material and even fewer tutorials) that they are then very reluctant to share their results. which of course only compounds the problem.
